Since we will be getting 4 more televisions and XBOX 360s this will mean a total of 16 will be present. Cut in half, that's 8 players per FFA match if we run them all at the same time. If we remain at 6, those additions will not be used, and I'm OK with that if it's best for everyone.
2v2 is the main event of the day. The FFA always takes at least 3 hours, and by that time everyone is more than ready for the 2v2. The 16 setup is going to definitely benefit the 2v2 event, nobody denies this, but the FFA is in question.
Consider the FFA game itself. It is arguably, 30 percent skill and 70 percent luck whether you have a good game or not. Spawning and mass location of players is absolutely contingent on whether or not you advance or not. If you're spawning in front of players who are hurt, and you're entering and leaving hot-zones at the right time then your chances of survival in the FFA brackets will increase, but FFA has never really been about true-skill. It's never been about protecting areas, spawn camping or keeping your death count low. It's about being aggressive, judging a scenario at lightning speed and making the best decision to better your chances of killing more than 1 player before you die, because you have to expect to die. FFA is luck. Many people don't like FFA because they don't believe this to be true. It goes against the gameplay that we have come to know with MLG 4v4 action: Slow, methodical, precise, strategic and tightly-aggressive. I think this is what makes FFA exciting.
So, let's consider each map:
The Pit
Perfect for 8 players. Too big for 6, so perfect for 8. We can leave both Snipers, take out OS and expect a great match.
Construct
Nade fest? Tis true if you are impatient. There are 6 possible ways to get from bottom to top. If you feel you have to go purple because it's the first way you come to, you're not being smart. We can modify the spawns a bit, but with 8 people you're going to have battles going on up top, mid and bottom. With 6 people, purple and gold are the focal points and now they wont be. They'll be nade zones from lobby and open and closed side.
Guardian
There are only two focal points: Top Gold/Gold 2 and Snipe Tower. Every other player has a disadvantage. Maybe with 8 players that will change, as camping each point will be more difficult. -Aaron Peltoniemi
I think he hit it spot on.
FFA is like driving a warthog on Valhalla or Sandtrap. KEEP MOVING!!! DON'T STOP!!! You need to keep moving, and Guardian is great for that. The map moves in a circle. Move with it, and you'll be surprised what happens.
Frigid
This is an awesome map. I think it's a winner and we're sticking with it once our HDDs will stop hiccuping. 8 players? Possibly, the only map there will be problems. It doesn't move cyclically like Guardian or Construct. We'll have to see.
Hybrid
Another great map that we need to get working, and I think it may be too small for 8 players.
Now, vote and give your opinion. I made the poll so that you cannot see the result until I lock the poll. Think for yourself.
